|Last weekend’s 5K. Yes, I’m doing things out of order,
running the races before training is done.
I was one of the last of my friends to give in to the crazy fad of having a cell phone. And I was also the one who thought it was weird that my friends would take their cell phones with them when we hit the streets or the track to exercise. That was then… tonight I found myself clutching my smart phone for dear life as it led me through a Couch to 5K (C25K) training session. And I have to admit, I’ve tried out several other apps along the way to either track my distance via gps or time my workouts.
I’m using an Android smart phone, so the app that I picked after reading a bunch of reviews was C25K Pro – it cost me all of $1.99 and it follows the standard C25K training program. You have the option of running it simultaneously with music on your phone if you like that for motivation.
I haven’t tried that feature yet, I didn’t have headphones with me and I didn’t want to interfere with the workouts of other people around me. This program does not track your distance or pace for you – it does not integrate with your phone’s GPS which is one reason I picked it. First, I don’t need to know how slow I’m running right now. Second, I am tired of installing apps that eat my battery life and don’t track accurately anyway.

If you don’t want a phone-buddy coach you can get the running program for free here and use your own iron will to stay on track and get you ready for a 5K race in 9 weeks.
What if it were Vin Diesel?
I don’t have an iron will, and might have given in to the heat, humidity, and my knees that really wanted me to remember I’m 41 and that I had already biked for 2 hours this morning. The encouraging voice on the app kept me moving, she’s friendly but not overly chipper. I think I can keep working out with her. I wish I could change the voice to something more personally motivating… like Vin Diesel. Ms. Not to Chipper might keep me going, but if Vin Diesel told me to kick it into gear and give him an extra 2 minutes of running I probably would.
What tools have you adopted to work out or do you have an iron will?
